A pastor in one of the pentecostal churches in Lagos is now in trouble following the drowning of a member and student pastor of the church during water baptism, recently.

Since the incident, members of the church-World Evangelical Bible International Church (WEBIC), Ogudu, Ojota in Lagos are yet to come to terms with the death of one of their young student pastors, Emmanuel Olayinka.

It was gathered that the late Olayinka had accompanied another young pastor named Abraham to perform water baptism for one of the church’s female converts, Miss Anita Osakwe on August 9, 2008.

The Tide On Sunday was told that the deceased was asked to test the depth of the water of the sea at Ogudu Ori-Oke where they went to perform the baptism but he fell and drowned.

Reacting to the incident in an interview, Pastor Alao George, Personal Assistant to the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Samson Ayorinde, described Olayinka’s death as a great shock.

He confirmed that members of the church were yet to come to terms with the reality of his death. “Before his death, Olayinka was on scholarship at the University of Lagos where he was studying Psychology. He was in third year”, George said.

He said Olayinka “displayed uncommon knowledge among his group which quickly attracted him to the elders ofthe church”.

According to George, a disciplinary committee has been set up to investigate Abraham to determine his culpability in the incident. “We want to assure the public that the pastor will be dealt with if found culpable in the death of the student pastor”, George said.

Meanwhile, Pastor Abraham and Anita are still being detained at the Ogudu Police Station while police continued their investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos State, Mr. Frank Mba who confirmed the story said the police were still investigating the incident.
