$25,000 bail set for priest accused of stealing

[Source] August 22, 2008:

Bail was set Thursday at $25,000 for a Chicago-area Catholic priest accused of stealing more than $40,000 from his former North Side parish.

Rev. Steven Patte, 64, pleaded not guilty earlier this month to charges of theft, money laundering and other financial crimes. Authorities said Patte took the money from July 2001 to July 2005, while assigned to St. Ita Catholic Church in Edgewater. He is accused of writing $28,000 in unauthorized checks to himself from parish accounts and making a $10,000 wire transfer of church funds to his own bank account, prosecutors said.
